Gynecologist Q & A

Why do I need to see a gynecologic specialist annually?

At Marion OB/GYN Inc., Dr. Foulk and his team of OB/GYN experts focus on you as a whole patient, with an emphasis on maintaining the health of your reproductive system.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends girls first visit a gynecologist between the ages of 13 and 15 years. However, gynecological exams for patients under the age of 21 usually do not include pelvic examinations. Teens with problems, such as menstrual disorders, vaginal discharge, or pelvic pain, may need an internal examination. But in the vast majority of cases, an initial visit focuses on patient education and provides an opportunity to establish a doctor-patient relationship, address any issues related to anatomical development, body image, self-confidence, weight management, immunizations (including the human papillomavirus vaccine), and contraception, and prevention of STIs.

You should continue seeing your gynecologist annually for well-woman exams and if you’re experiencing any issues with your period, or having problems with perimenopause, menopause, or beyond.

The gynecologic specialists at Marion OB/GYN Inc. are also obstetrics specialists. You can use your specialist’s knowledge and skill to increase your odds of becoming pregnant and help you navigate your pregnancy.

What happens during a gynecological exam?

Your gynecological exam consists of two parts. First, your Marion specialist determines your general health. Then Dr. Foulk or an OB/GYN expert examines your reproductive organ.

During your general exam, your Marion specialist may:

  • Ask about any issues or concerns you have
  • Discuss your medical and family history
  • Weigh you
  • Take your blood pressure
  • Conduct blood and urine tests

Depending on your age and whether or not you’re sexually active, your Marion specialist may:

  • Examine your vulvar and vaginal area in the presence of a nurse or aide
  • Use a speculum to view inside your vagina and cervix
  • Conduct a PAP test
  • Conduct a pelvic exam
  • Palpate your breasts to search for lumps
  • Draw blood or take cervical swabs to test for STDs
  • Conduct other tests, if necessary
